Liriodendron tulipifera - Tulip or Yellow Poplar is a large, deciduous, stately, canopy tree. It has broad, tulip-shaped leaves and is long-lived. This is a fast-growing, colonizing tree that can often reach 4 feet diameter. Not recommended as a street tree. Tulip poplar is so named for its large, showy, tulip shaped flowers in late spring.

Wildlife value: White-tailed deer browse yellow-poplar during all seasons. Northern bobwhites, purple finches, cottontails, red squirrels, gray squirrels, and white-footed mice eat the seeds. Yellow-bellied sapsuckers use the phloem, and ruby-throated hummingbirds consume flower nectar. Tree provides habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
Notes of Interest: Native Americans made dugout canoes from tuliptree trunks. This is the state tree of Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana.
