Wild Hydrangea or Smooth Hydrangea is a nice 3-6 foot shrub for part shade. Currently we have a cultivar of this native shrub called "Annabelle". It produces large round clusters of white, sterile flowers. The photo is of this cultivar in summer 2006. The dry flowerheads persist through the winter, adding interest to the winter landscape.

Notes of Interest: Blooms on new wood, therefore best to cut back in late winter. Native Americans used this plant for medicinal purposes and also as food/drink. The twigs were peeled, boiled thoroughly, fried and eaten, and peeled branches and twigs were boiled to make tea.
