Campsis radicans

Campsis radicans

SKU: VC00500

Campsis radicans - Trumpet creeper, Trumpet vine or cow vine is a rampant woody vine to 35 ft., climbing or scrambling over everything in its path by aerial rootlets. The pinnately compound, dark-green leaves are 6-15 in. long. The trumpet-shaped flowers have bright orange, waxy petals. This attractive vine is often cultivated. It climbs by means of aerial rootlets on the stem and can be undesirably aggressive. On the other hand, hummingbirds love the nectar of this vine and will daily frequent my neighbors vine within Baltimore City.

Notes of Interest: Blooms on new growth, so early spring pruning will not affect the flowering. Vines must be grown on sturdy structures because mature plants produce considerable weight and also can damage wood and other soft structures when it attaches to walls by aerial roots or suckers.. To keep it in check (because it can get out of control!), plant it near concrete or an area that you can mow; mowing down the suckers will discourage them. Fairly drought tolerant. Cut back branches to two buds in the winter to encourage bushier growth and more blooms. Useful in erosion control and for hiding fences and old garages.
