Acer rubrum - Red Maple is a fast growing, medium to large, deciduous tree which has lovely fall foliage and red spring flowers. It is monoecious, meaning that both the male and female flowers are on the same plant. Though named for the spring flower color, the Red Maple autumn foliage is a striking scarlet, though it can also vary from greenish-yellow to burgundy. It prefers moist, acidic soils and can tolerate occasional flooding. Red Maples will perform best in full sun in the residential landscape but will tolerate part shade to shade. Often planted as a street tree.
