Carex pensylvanica - Pennsylvania Sedge or Yellow Sedge is a native, low-growing grasslike perennial. It reproduces vegetatively, meaning with underground rhizomes and is turf-forming with green, arching leaves. Yellow sedge makes a good groundcover in Oak, Pine, Sugar Maple, or Basswood forests. Its noninvasive, creeping foliage forms dense mats of medium green, fine-textured foliage growing 6 to 8 inches unmowed.

Panicum virgatum - Switchgrass is a native, clump-forming, warm-season perennial grass with open, lacy sprays of seeds. One of the dominant species of the tallgrass prairie, Switchgrass reaches 3-6 feet tall and has reddish-purple seedheads when ripe and pale yellow fall color. The yellow colored clumps last throughout the winter. Switchgrass is an attractive accent in the garden, with pink-tinged flower panicles in mid-summer. Cut back clumps to the ground in late winter to early spring. Makes a good cut flower or dried flower.
